Changing Perspective and Rethinking World History

The Shisa (Okinawa Lion) have changed in form and number over time. I am modifying Shisa statues that I have found at recycling shops or on Mercari, which were once owned by others. What kind of history has this Shisa witnessed? The Shisa statues, whose left and right sides are joined, are being altered by gradually cutting the male and female parts, rejoining them, and then firing them again. Without my intervention, these ceramic Shisa statues would maintain the same form for hundreds or even thousands of years. By remaking their shape, I re-experience the passage of time and bring the physical traces of history into a new form.

To prompt the viewer’s thinking visually, I am using the readymade method, bringing out the essence of objects. This act is not limited to Okinawa, but rather leads us to face the core of world history and its cultural transformations.

By using sandbags as weights, I am not only supporting Okinawa but symbolically expressing the migration, destruction, and transformation that lands and cultures around the world have faced throughout history. Cultures and beliefs are shaped in a limited time and change over time, and I want to emphasize that these changes are interconnected and overlap as part of world history. Through the situation where Okinawa’s unique values and traditions are being lost, we need to reawaken to the similar phenomena happening around the world.

By posing questions from multiple perspectives, I aim to use Okinawa as a starting point and place its values in a global context, deepening reflection on past, present, and future histories. I wish to transcend historical and cultural boundaries and discover new hope and possibilities where right and left, different positions and perspectives intersect.

改變視角，重新思考世界的歷史

在沖繩的風獅爺隨著時代的變遷，不斷改變其形態和數量。我正在對從回收店和Mercari上找到的，曾被他人擁有過的風獅爺進行改造。這些風獅爺見證過怎樣的歷史呢？當左右兩側接合的風獅爺，我將雌雄的部分稍微切割，再將它們重新接合並重新燒製。如果我不加以改動，它們的形狀將在幾百年、幾千年的時間裡保持不變。通過重新燒製其形狀，我讓時代的變遷在物理上重新顯現，並以新的方式呈現歷史所留下的痕跡。

我使用現成品的手法來喚起觀者的思考，並揭示物品的本質。這一行為，不僅僅局限於沖繩，而是讓我們面對世界歷史以及文化變遷的根本。

通過使用裝滿沙土的沙袋作為重物，我不僅是支撐沖繩，還象徵性地表現了世界各地的土地和文化在歷史中所經歷的遷徙、破壞與變革。文化與信仰在有限的時間內被塑造並隨著時間變化，我想強調的是，這些變化作為世界歷史的一部分，彼此相連，交織重疊。透過沖繩特有的價值觀與傳統正在失落的情境，我們應該重新意識到在全球範圍內發生的類似現象。

我希望通過多角度的提問，將沖繩作為出發點，並將它的價值放置在全球語境中，深入思考過去、現在和未來的歷史。我希望跨越歷史和文化的邊界，在右與左、不同立場與視角的交匯處，發現新的希望與可能性。

視点を変えて、世界の歴史を再考する

シーサーは時代とともにその姿や数が変容してきました。私はリサイクルショップやメルカリで見つけた、過去の所有者によって使われていたシーサーに手を加えています。このシーサーは、どのような歴史を見てきたのでしょうか。左右が接合されたシーサーは、雌雄の部分を少しずつ切り取って再接合し、再度焼成しています。もし私が手を加えなければ、何百年、何千年と同じ姿を保ち続ける陶器のシーサー。その形状を再び焼き直すことで、時代の変遷を追体験し、歴史が持つ物理的な痕跡を新たな形で顕在化させています。

私は、視覚的に見る者の思考を促すため、レディメイドの手法を用い、物の本質を浮き彫りにします。この行為は、沖縄に限らず、世界の歴史とその文化的変容の根源に向き合わせるものです。

土嚢袋に入った砂利を重しとして使用することで、ただ沖縄を支えるだけでなく、世界中の土地や文化が歴史の中で直面してきた移動、破壊、変革を象徴的に表現しています。文化や信仰は限られた時間の中で形作られ、時と共に変化しますが、その変化が世界の歴史の一部としてつながり、重なり合っていることを強調したいのです。沖縄固有の価値観や伝統が失われつつある状況を通じて、我々は世界中で起こっている同様の現象を改めて意識する必要があると考えます。

私は多角的に問いを投げかけることで、沖縄を起点にしながらも、その価値を世界的な文脈に位置づけ、過去、現在、そして未来の歴史に対する思索を深めていきたいと思っています。歴史的・文化的な境界を越え、右と左、異なる立場や視点が交差するところに、新たな希望と可能性を見出したいと考えています。
