“JASMINE -Transnational Blooming” is a semi-fictional narrative story intertwined with tea, centered around the history of the paternal grandfather and the jasmine flower industry in the southern Wanhua district of Taipei. Currently in Okinawa, jasmine tea, known as “sanpin tea,” is common, but before the war, the tea known as “Qingming tea,” produced in Fujian Province of China and northern Taiwan, was often consumed. Inspired by the fact that jasmine tea is called by different names depending on the region, the story unfolds.
In the exhibition, there is a balloon installation representing the elderly protagonist after their journey through China, Taiwan, and Okinawa (The Ryukyu Islands under United States administration), depicted by a person in a wheelchair and the one pushing it. This work also reflects the social situation of contemporary Taiwan, incorporating the relationship with home care workers from Southeast Asia.
Additionally, an interactive tea ceremony is held, where visitors can experience four distinct flavors of tea, blended from regional herbs influenced by the protagonist’s movements, allowing them to “taste” the protagonist’s life journey. This incorporates a food approach actively.
